Landscape Assessment

Lovin’ on Our Babies: An Assessment of the Social-Emotional Landscape in Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee

How well we love on and support our babies shapes their development as well as their families’ wellbeing, and the economic growth and vitality of our community.

We are grateful to the families, providers, caregivers, and systems leaders who participated in our Landscape Assessment focus groups, surveys, and interviews.

Without them, we would not have been able to provide such a full and vibrant picture of the strengths and challenges for families as they strive to ensure their children can reach their fullest potential.

First 8 Memphis is excited to share our new report, Lovin’ on Our Babies: An Assessment of the Social-Emotional Landscape in Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee.

More about our Landscape Assessment:

First 8 Memphis, in partnership with the Leadership Council’s Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Working Group, engaged with Start Early Consulting to assess Memphis and Shelby County’s Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) landscape.

The Landscape Assessment was conducted in September - December of 2023. The Assessment helped us to understand how families and professionals (including child care providers, Pre-K teachers, social workers, family support workers, etc.) are caring for and nurturing their young children in our community. The goal of the project was to find strategies to strengthen and improve the supports and services available to young children, their families, and pregnant people in Memphis.

Collaborators: Our youngest learners, parents, families, providers, Start Early Consulting, our Advisory Council, IECMH Working Group, Leadership Council partners, Urban Child Institute, and a host of many other individuals and organizations.
