Organizational Summary

First 8 Memphis (F8M) is implementing Shelby County Tennessee’s first high-quality early care and education system which aims to prepare 90% of our children to be Kindergarten ready and to ensure that 90% of 3rd graders are reading on grade level by 2025. We are an advocacy, coordinating and convening organization working across the age spectrum and with programs that support young children and their families including: home visiting, childcare, Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K) and Kindergarten – 3rd grade supports. F8M is a start-up and beginning to build its staff capacity; the organization will engage in a strategic plan in 2021. F8M is governed by a highly regarded Board of Directors who partner with staff to help reach our community and organizational goals.

Role Responsibilities and Duties

F8M seeks a strategic and execution-minded Director of Strategic Operations with the range of knowledge, skills, and mindsets to successfully support, plan, and at times, lead with the Executive Director. Within this mission-driven organization, the Director of Strategic Operations will be a thoughtful and a key strategic partner in program management, communications, finance and external partnerships. The Director of Strategic Operations will demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and brand awareness in both material creation and through interpersonal relationships.

Role and Responsibilities
  • Provide organizational leadership to support the ongoing programmatic growth and infrastructure development of F8M
  • Serve as a thought-partner to the Executive Director for big picture programmatic, administrative, human resources, and budget decisions
  • Serve as project manager for F8M Pre-K program, which includes 12 Pre-K Operators and 74 Pre-K classrooms this school year
  • Oversee and coordinate the business functions of the organization, including program management, marketing and communications, compliance and finance
  • Prepare materials for internal and external stakeholders including the F8M Board, Committees and/or Working Groups, F8M Leadership Council, F8M Pre-K Outcomes Finance Oversight Committee, etc. in partnership with the Executive Director
  • Represent F8M externally at community events, on committees of partner organizations, and/or other coalitions, both episodic and long-term, as needed
  • Manage three direct reports with the potential to manage a small team, as the organization grows

Candidate Profile

The Director of Strategic Operations will be an integral part of F8M’s growing team and organization. The Director of Strategic Operations will support the Executive Director in managing the organization’s growing programmatic portfolio, including Pre-K, its current major program, and internal operations (this role may shift to accommodate organizational growth). Success in this position requires a self-starter entrepreneurial spirit and someone ready to roll-up their sleeves and work in a start-up environment. The candidate must have deep empathy and commitment to addressing issues and challenges faced by Black and Brown and other under-invested communities, families, and young children in Memphis and Shelby County. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, and strong attention to detail a must. The candidate must enjoy a mix of work with a high degree of autonomy and collaboration.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, education, early childhood development, business administration or related field or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 4-5 years of successful mid-to-senior level leadership experience, social impact, non-profit organization, government, and/or educational institution experience; minimum of 3 years of management experience with strong development, coaching, and management instincts, including lateral management and/or service on a higher-level organizational team
  • Demonstrated record of success in strategic thinking and planning, including taking projects from idea to full execution; demonstrated experience in overseeing and coordinating the business functions of an organization, including program management, marketing and communications, compliance, and finance
  • Sound judgment on when and how to communicate a message to a variety of stakeholders in the cycle of brainstorm to revisions to program launch
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with a track-record of taking an analytic approach with exceptional attention to detail
Additional, Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduate degree in nonprofit management, education, early childhood development, business administration or related field
  • Experience in fund development, marketing or branding knowledge and skills
  • Knowledge of holistic early childhood development, including infant and early childhood mental health 
Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

Duties will be primarily carried out indoors, in environmentally controlled conditions with more than 80% of work time at a computer, in virtual or in-person meetings, or on phone calls. Work may occasionally require some evening and weekend activity. When safe, the Director of Strategic Operations will travel around Shelby County and potentially statewide and nationally. Successful candidates will have proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of programs including Excel, PowerPoint and Word; G Suite; Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.); and basic web platforms and web browsers.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the F8M staff is working remotely focusing on staying healthy and safe while balancing the needs of our organization, partners and stakeholders. Our remote working policies will be updated based on the recommendations of public health officials.

Commitment and Compensation

Compensation and Benefits: The salary for this role is $100,000, commensurate with experience. Benefits include standard health, dental and 401K retirement plan, with a match, and a professional development stipend. F8M offers a flexible work environment and a generous holiday schedule, including acknowledging Juneteenth as a paid holiday and is closed the last week of December.
